Looking for a new fitness and exercise routine? Try Zumba class! It is an exciting and fast paced workout that is based off of Latin dance and music. Many people may be hesitant to try it, but it is not hard to learn and you don’t have to know how to dance. The instructors take you through the steps slowly and allow you to speed up when you feel like you can. How did the Zumba routine start and how did it become so popular?

Zumba History

The fitness phenomenon known as Zumba started as an accident. In the mid-90′s Alberto “Beto” Perez went to start his aerobics class in his native country, Colombia, and found that he did not have his usual music. In an attempt to improvise, Beto pulled out whatever tapes he had in his backpack. On these tapes were his favourite types of Latin music including salsa and merengue. He used that music to teach the class and they loved it. Afterward he started an entire class based off of Latin music and dance called the Zumba Fitness Party. It was the most popular class offered at the gym Beto worked at.

After his success in Colombia Beto moved the class to the United States. After which he was contacted by Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. Together, the three men trademarked the word Zumba and built a fitness empire off of Beto’s accidental discovery.

Benefits of Zumba

The official Zumba website state that those who do the Zumba routine frequently will experience “long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.”

Zumba instructors use fast and slow movements adapted from all types of latin dance set to the background of Latin music to tone muscle and burn fat. It can also be a great cardio workout. This is not for the shy or inhibited kind of person. Someone who wants to see physical benefits from the Zumba routine must throw their inhibitions to the wind. They cannot care if they look goofy dancing. It doesn’t matter if one doesn’t have rhythm or has two left feet. The most important thing to do is to move and with funky Latin music blasting, one will be hard pressed not to!

With class numbers hitting about 40 every Monday night, we are have the best time and laughing and smiling whilst burning heaps of calories.  I have been showcasing Zumba at a selection of local clubs but no one has a regular class near Maldon yet apart from us of course!  I am now sending out a challenge to bring the men along, we have seen the odd male participant being dragged in by a partner, but Beto who designed Zumba was and is a man, so where are all the men ladies? Bring them along!
